2017 Day of Caring

Saturday, May 13th is the United Way of Knox County's 7th annual Day of Caring. Many volunteers are needed for projects at our Partner Agencies! Please join us on this day to LIVE UNITED in Knox County. Consider inviting your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to help with these projects. ***We would like everyone to meet at Gordon Behrents Senior Center before going to project sites.

Projects Include:

  1. Camp Kidz  - Thank you - we have all volunteer slots filled
    Address:  2015 Windish Drive, Galesburg, IL  (Auditorium at KCCDD)
     
  2. Gordon Behrents Senior Center
    Address:  2015 Windish Drive, Galesburg, IL
    Project:  Painting, Planting/Potting flowers, prepping flower bed.
     
  3. FISH of Galesburg Thank you - we have all 9:00 - 12:00 volunteer slots filled
    Address: 688 Hawthorne Court, Galesburg, IL
     
  4. Camp Big Sky
    Address 9928 W. Grange Hall Road, Princeville, IL 61559
    Project 1: Several painting projects from walkways to small sheds.
    Additional Information: Bring work gloves if available.  Materials and latex gloves will be supplied
    Volunteers should be College Students or Adults
     
  5. Camp Big Sky

    Project 2: Weed and rake bocce ball court
    Additional Information: Bring work gloves if available.  Garden tools will be available.
    Volunteers should be College Students or Adults
     
  6. American Red Cross
    Address: Instructions will be given at Hawthorne Centre Regional Training Site,
    2233 Veterans Drive, Galesburg, IL.
    Project: Volunteers are needed to assist with smoke alarm installations and educating residents of the importance of having a home fire escape plan. NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. Volunteers will receive training and will work in teams of three. We welcome individual volunteers and encourage civic organization and businesses to participate.
    Volunteer Job Descriptions:
          Installer: Responsible for installing smoke alarms with the resident's permission, and within
          the manufacturer's and program guidelines.
          Documenter: Responsible for tracking supplies and ensuring documentation is completed
          correctly.
          Safety Educator:  Responsible for reviewing a fire safety checklist with the resident, assisting
          the resident in completing a household disaster pan and providing helpful safety information.
    Volunteers should be 16 or older.
    Additional Information: Wear comfortable shoes as there will be walking between homes, but the installation & education will happen indoors.  It is recommended that volunteers leave personal valuables and jewelry at home or locked in a vehicle.  Volunteers are encouraged, but not required, to bring any of the following: Cordless drill, Screwdriver (phillips & flathead), Flashlight, Hammer, Safety goggles, Extension cord, Safety/step ladder, Measuring Tape.
     
  7. FISH of Galesburg This project will be from 12:00 - 3:00 pm
    Address: 688 Hawthorne Court, Galesburg, IL
    Project: The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive is on Saturday, May 13.  Donated food is delivered to FISH where it is weighed, sorted, and shelved.  There is some lifting involved, depending upon the type of work being performed.  Last year over 25,000 pounds of food was unloaded, weighed, packed, and stored.  The busiest times are from 11:30 -3:00.  Volunteers may come and go as they need.
